Techniques You May Be Introduced To:

Psychoeducation - Understanding symptoms, diagnoses, etiology, and treatment options; getting started on improvement through education.

Cognitive strategies - Exploring how to identify and reshape unrealistic or unhelpful thinking patterns and how to cope with difficult thoughts that can't be changed.

Behavioural changes - Making practical changes to actions and routines.

Exploring values - Clarifying what matters to you the most.

Goal-setting - Setting SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely).

Acceptance-based strategies - Learning to work with, not against, difficult thoughts, emotions and experiences.

Skills-building - Enhancing coping, communication, and life management abilities.

Distress tolerance - Techniques for helping to manage overwhelming times without making things worse.

Interpersonal functioning - Discussing if, when and how to strengthen relationships and boundaries.

Mindfulness - Staying grounded and having increased awareness; learning about what this means and when/how it might be helpful.

Assertiveness - Communicating clearly and respectfully; how to get what you want or need and maintain the relationship in the way that works for you.

Learning about emotions - Identifying and managing emotions.

While Psych Consult aims to provide timely, accessible psychological support, there are some areas that we do not currently offer services for. This ensures that clients receive the most appropriate care from providers with the right training and resources.

Are We Right For You?

If you are unsure whether your situation falls within our scope, please feel free to contact us. We will attempt to guide you toward the right resources.

*For urgent matters please seek immediate help.

  • We provide support for adults only (19+)

    We hope to expand services to include children and adolescents in the future.

  • We provide short-term care only

    In order to serve our clients and other professionals with on-call services, we only provide short-term support (typically 1-3 sessions up to 50 minutes each). We often direct our clients to longer-termed services, and are happy to do so. However, we are not available to provide such services through Psych Consult.

  • We do not provide care for individuals who:

    - are currently suicidal*
    - have engaged in recent or ongoing self-harm*
    - are otherwise involved in a crisis situation that may need immediate, urgent care*
    - are actively under the influence of a substance
    - are in need of treatment for substance use other than alcohol-related concerns
    - are in active psychosis or experiencing a significant thought disorder
    - require in-person care or monitoring
    - need comprehensive psychological or diagnostic assessment
    - seeking family therapy or group therapy
    - are in need of support related to legal matters including custody evaluations or court-ordered services
    - are under the age of 19
    - are not currently residing in B.C. (at the time of service)

  • We only work with individuals currently residing in B.C.

    This is due to our professional guidelines under the College of Health and Care Professionals of B.C.
